You Thought all Skin Care Products Were Vegetarian?
You might not have thought in-depth about the ingredients used in skin care
products, after all there isn't an obvious link with being vegetarian. If that
is the case you might be surprised to know that animal products are used in
skin care products too. For example:
Perfumes may have Civet (from anal pouch of civet cat), musk (from male
musk deer), castoreum (anal sex gland of the beaver) or ambergris (whale excretion).
Shampoos and conditioners may have Chitin (from insects and crustacea)
and keratin (protein from hair, horn, hoof and feathers),
Soaps often use Tallow (hard animal fat)
Squalene (from liver of shark), urea (waste nitrogen) find their way into
many things.
The Benefit of shopping with Pure Skin Care

Synthetic Ingredients are Normally Tested on Animals.
It is also worth remembering that even if the manufacturer of the products say they do not test on animals, if they contain synthetic ingredients it is almost certain that the individual ingredients themselves will have been tested on an animal somewhere along the line. If nothing else the synthetic ingredient will probably have an LD50 (Lethal Dose 50) rating. LD50 indicates the quantity of the chemical necessary to kill 50% of the animal test subjects and is measured in units per kilogram or PPM (Parts Per Million) of the animal's body weight. Unfortunately this does not stop many manufacturers from claiming their products are cruelty free, as the product itself has not been tested on animals.
If you don't believe me then you can always check for yourself. Searching a site like : http://www.hazard.com/msds/ for individual synthetic ingredients will show reports that contain LD50 ratings.
